Started in 1926, the Slovenian Women's Union was the first national organization to provide burial insurance for women of Slovenian ancestry. Branch #5 Indianapolis was incorporated in 1927. Early members met at the Slovenian National Home on Thursday mornings, with meetings and pitch in lunches shared along with conversations of daily life in the Slovenian community of Haughville. As times changed, associate and social members were accepted, and as more women joined the workforce, it became more and more difficult to host monthly meetings and get new members. Insurance policies are no longer issued, and membership includes both women and men. Now known as SLOVENIAN UNION OF AMERICA, SUA focus is on Slovenian genealogy, preserving traditions and customs, foods and cultures, and quarterly magazine "ZARJA" that features music, travel and history, plus reports from all the branches nationwide. Indianapolis Branch #5 is a non profit, social club that meets at the Nash several times a year, host Friday night dinners, special events with other Indy Slovenian organizations.
