Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota (SNPJ) Franc Preseren Lodge 34
Organized on December 22, 1905 and the holder of 19 shares of the Slovenian National Home (SNH), SNPJ is now known as the Slovene National Benefit Society. SNPJ is a Non-Profit Fraternal Insurance Organization founded in 1904. There are over 225 friendly lodges across America. They continue to offer Life Insurance and IRA Annuities as well as other services.
Our Lodge has over 300 members and meets four times a year and continues to support the SNH. We try to have four dinners at the SNH throughout the year in which we provide all the food, preparation and serving with all proceeds going to the SNH. Our current officers are President Mary Dragan, Secretary/Treasurer Jerry Watson and Auditors Angie Dragan and Jennifer Velikan. Our Lodge would be very happy to welcome any new members!
Started in 1926, the Slovenian Women's Union was the first national organization to provide burial insurance for women of Slovenian ancestry. Branch #5 Indianapolis was incorporated in 1927. Early members met at the Slovenian National Home on Thursday mornings, with meetings and pitch in lunches shared along with conversations of daily life in the Slovenian community of Haughville. As times changed, associate and social members were accepted, and as more women joined the workforce, it became more and more difficult to host monthly meetings and get new members. Insurance policies are no longer issued, and membership includes both women and men. Now known as SLOVENIAN UNION OF AMERICA, SUA focus is on Slovenian genealogy, preserving traditions and customs, foods and cultures, and quarterly magazine "ZARJA" that features music, travel and history, plus reports from all the branches nationwide. Indianapolis Branch #5 is a non profit, social club that meets at the Nash several times a year, host Friday night dinners, special events with other Indy Slovenian organizations.
